About this page:

Hi, I'm Simon Zauner. This website displays the research findings of my Master's thesis.

In March 2016 I met Arnau Gifreu-Castells, founder and creator of COME/IN/DOC at the i-Docs symposium in Bristol, England, where he offered a collaboration and provided parts of interviews with experts in the field of the interactive documentary he conducted between 2012 and 2016 for evaluation. These interviews represent a valuable source of information in this young field of research.

Arnau asked his interviewees the following questions:

1. Do you believe that the role of the author is threatened in this new genre?

2. Do you think there is a change in the logic of production, distribution and exhibition?

These questions were open-ended and a first analysis showed that the answers contain multiple significant insights on the issues of authorship and new models of production, distribution and exhibition of the interactive documentary. Therefore the research questions my Master's thesis attempts to answer could be phrased broader.

A third assignment of the on-hand thesis was an endeavour to define the interactive documentary by means of scientific literature.

The three research questions form as follows:

1. How can the term interactive documentary be defined and what kinds of interactive documentaries exist?

2. What is the role of the author in the interactive documentary?

3. Which new models of production, distribution and exhibition for interactive documentaries are there?

As a contribution to COME/IN/DOC I created this website displaying the research results gained from the interview analysis (research questions 1 and 2).

If you are interested in research question 1, you can download the full thesis (top navigation bar) and read chapter 3.
